Introduction to the Challenge
The “Hong Kong Secondary Student Space Station Popular Science Payload and Science Experiment Design Challenge” is co-organised by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the Technology and Engineering Center for Space Utilization, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in support of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, along with partner organisations including the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, and the Education Convergence.
The Challenge aims to promote aerospace education, providing students with invaluable opportunities to participate in national aerospace projects. It seeks to ignite students’ passion for exploring the vast universe, and cultivate their awareness of scientific innovation and a sense of national pride and belonging through scientific practice and challenging tasks.
The details of the Challenge can be found at EDBCM No. 31/2025.
For details of the Challenge, interested schools may apply for the Kick-off Ceremony cum Experiment Design Proposal Briefing Session via the Training Calendar System (Course ID: CSD020250319)

Eligibility
- Each school may register three teams at most.
- Each team consisting of three to five students.
- Students may also form teams across schools. *
*Note: If schools send students to participate across schools, each cross-school team will be counted as one team.
- Each participating team is required to submit a scientific experiment design proposal that is suitable for conducting in space environment or under microgravity conditions.
Project Requirements
- Participating teams must complete a prototype of a payload or space science experiment with basic functionality.
- Experiments must be conducted under the guidance of a supervising teacher and comply with the safety guidelines as set out by the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. (For details, see Safety Handbook).
- Projects that have participated in other science competitions are also eligible for this competition, improvements based on the original work are encouraged. Participants must declare any previous participation (e.g. competition name, awards received) and clearly indicate the added value and elements submitted for this competition.
- Using AI (e.g., DeepSeek) for assistance is permitted.

Based on the initial evaluation, first, second, and third prizes will be awarded.
Note:
- After submitting the project documents and demonstration videos, teams should retain the prototype of the payload or space science experiment.
- At least two of the first-prize-winning projects will be selected for online or onsite mission evaluation by aerospace experts, who will inspect the prototype. Teams that pass the final evaluation will receive guidance from aerospace experts to finalize their projects.
Submission Format
- Submitting a scientific experiment design document that introduces the scientific or popular science significance of the project, details of the design implementation, and photos of the payload or space science experiment project prototype including references, if applicable. The document must be in PDF format, not exceeding 20 pages and 10MB.
- Submitting a demonstration video: The video should be no longer than 5 minutes and no larger than 200MB in MP4 or MKV format (if the video is oversized, tools like handbrake may be used to compress the video, limiting the bitrate to 3Mbps or below).
